What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling or ground fighting martial art. It is based on the principle that a smaller and weaker person will be more likely to survive against a bigger, stronger assailant by ‘taking the fight’ to the ground and using techniques based on leverage and body mechanics (e.g., joint locks and choke holds) to defeat the attacker. In its self-defense application, BJJ emphasizes survival first and defeating the opponent (by submission) second. Because it is based on grappling techniques via leverage rather than striking and over reliance on speed and body strength, BJJ is an ideal martial art for both women and men of all ages regardless of their physical size or athletic abilities. Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone.

What do the Classes consist of?
Classes begin with a session of calisthenics and stretching. Following our unique and ever-changing warm-up, we then begin the technical portion of class. Techniques when done over and over help form muscle memory and help our students retain the technique. After drilling is completed we then begin to roll (or spar). Rolling is when a student is able to put their techniques to the test with training partners who resist and counter just as they would in an actual fight, providing valuable real-world experience should the techniques ever need to be applied in an actual self-defense situation.
